Canada and Mexico models will be exclusive to Toy R Us while Pureto Rico and Guam models are exclusive to K-Mart Stores. Some specially marked models will be released for Puerto Rico, Guam, Canada, & Mexico. These mail order models will not be available in the retail stores. Also, by sending 40 proof of purchases will get you a specially marked "Washington DC" model. Collectors can send 5 proof of purchases from any one region to Mattel and receive a specially marked Regional model. There will be 50 models arranged in 4 different groups. Each model will come individually packed in a blister pack with a License plate dipicting the two letter stateabbreviation and the a three digit number showing the order in which the state joined the Union. To commemorate this special event, Mattel has decided to release a special model for each of the 50 states of the US. This is something special.2002 marks the 50th birthday of Matchbox. "My friend, said, 'Your dad was in the Navy? What year, what ship was he on?' Then he went into his collection and he had a matchcover from that ship which he gave the guy, who was just speechless. He and a fellow collector met a man at an event, who mentioned his father was in the Navy during World War II. The Rathkamp Matchcover Society just marked its 79th annual convention in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Members come from around the U.S., Canada and abroad. Today, there are over 9,000 members, including Eadie. The society was founded in 1939 by a group of enthusiastic matchcover collectors in New York City.
